Suor Evangenline Presente Bastasa è nata l'11 marzo 1974 a Tubuan, Loon, Bohol, Filippine. È la sesta dei 12 figli del defunto Felix Bastasa, Sr. e di Francisca Presente, entrambi residenti a Babak, Samal, Davao del Norte. È entrata nella Congregazione il 2 febbraio 1996 nella comunità di Madre Nazarena Domus (MND)  Laoag, Ilocos Norte, all'età di 22 anni. Da aspirante, le è stato chiesto dalla Congregazione di studiare e ha conseguito la laurea in Scienze dell'Educazione Elementare nel 2000 presso il Divine Word College di Laoag, Ilocos Norte. L'8 dicembre del 2000 è stata ammessa al pre-noviziato e dopo un anno, il 31 luglio 2001, ha iniziato il noviziato a Marikina con Sr. Daria Ortega come sua formatrice. Durante il noviziato, ha conseguito l'abilitazione per insegnante, che ha superato con successo. Il 27 luglio 2003 a Marikina, nelle mani di Madre Isabella Carlone, superiora delegata, ha emesso la prima professione religiosa. Concluso lo juniorato ha emesso la professione perpetua il 5 luglio 2009 nella sua città natale, presso la parrocchia Vergine Addolorata a Babak, Samal, Davao del Norte, nelle mani di Madre Elna Casimsiman, superiora delegata.

Dal 17 maggio 2009 al 6 settembre 2011 è stata trasferita a Minglanilla, Cebu, come vice superiora, animatrice vocazionale, catechista, ministro straordinaria della Santa Comunione ai malati. Dal 14 settembre 2011 al 30 luglio 2012 è stata a Roma per l'anno carismatico. Al rientro nelle Filippine, è stata assegnata alla nostra comunità di Vintar come economa della comunità, insegnante di religione a St. Nicholas Academy (SNA) e promotrice vocazionale. Nella stessa comunità è stata nominata superiora dal 2016 al 2018.

Dal 2018 al 2020, è stata assegnata alla comunità di Marikina come promotrice vocazionale e da lì è stata trasferita a Tahanang Divino Zelo (TDZ) a Silang, Cavite  dal 2020-2021,  prestando anche servizio come coordinatrice della pastorale universitaria presso il Collegio dei Rogazionisti, assistente della formatrice delle novizie e catechista. Dopo un anno di esperienza, ha chiesto di essere trasferita di nuovo a Marikina perché voleva insegnare nella nostra scuola e così le è stato affidato il compito di essere consulente di classe-3 del PAS nel 2021 e allo stesso tempo promotrice vocazionale part-time. A causa di alcune necessità ha accettato la responsabilità di vice superiora nel 2022.

In qualsiasi comunità appartenesse, ha dato il meglio di sé nonostante le sue debolezze e i suoi limiti. Era piena di creatività e di iniziative. È stata una risorsa preziosa per l'istituto, condividendo i suoi talenti, specialmente nel suonare la chitarra durante le celebrazioni liturgiche. È stata un modello per gli altri membri della comunità, grazie ai suoi modi semplici e diretti. Il suo spirito di sacrificio e il suo senso di appartenenza sono molto visibili nella comunità e nel suo luogo di apostolato. Fino al suo ultimo respiro ha dimostrato la sua passione per le vocazioni. Ha offerto i suoi dolori per l'incremento delle vocazioni nella Chiesa, specialmente al nostro Istituto, a lei molto caro.

La mattina del 7 dicembre 2022, chiese di confessarsi e di guarire a Padre Jimmy Matthew, un sacerdote della Santa Croce che presiedeva la santa messa quel giorno, perché la febbre era a fasi alterne. Poi ha svolto la normale routine della giornata, ma in tarda mattinata è quasi crollata nella sua stanza. Si sentiva molto debole e così, nel pomeriggio, Madre Daria e Madre Isabella l'hanno portata d'urgenza all'ospedale San Camillo e hanno lasciato Sr. Delphina Maria Asa ad assisterla. A mezzanotte, i medici hanno chiamato d'urgenza dicendo che la condizione di salute di Sr. Evangeline stava peggiorando e hanno consigliato di portarla in terapia intensiva, che non è disponibile in quell'ospedale, perché il risultato della radiografia rivelava un leggero ingrossamento del cuore. Quindi è stata trasferita all'Asian Hospital con l'ambulanza.

I medici hanno fatto del loro meglio per curare le complicazioni al cuore e alla tiroide, ma hanno scoperto che il suo sistema immunitario era molto basso e non potevano eseguire altri interventi perché il suo corpo non rispondeva. Alcune sorelle si sono alternate per assisterla. Alle 16.30 del 10 dicembre i medici hanno comunicato che le sue condizioni stavano rapidamente deteriorando. Alle 17.15 abbiamo ricevuto la notizia che Sr. Evangeline si è consegnata al Signore che ha amato e servito fedelmente nella sua vita.

È rimasta in ospedale per 3 giorni, dall'8 al 10 dicembre 2022. Poi è stata portata all'obitorio dell'ospedale e il giorno dopo il corpo è stato portato alla Loyola Memorial Funeral Homes e il 12 dicembre al mattino è stato trasferito nella comunità di Marikina, in attesa della sepoltura prevista per il 14 dicembre nel pomeriggio. Sono venuti i familiari da Davao e anche alcune nostre consorelle delle diverse comunità. Molti sacerdoti hanno concelebrato la messa funebre presieduta da p. Orville Cajigal, superiore provinciale RCJ. Durante la veglia, i nostri fratelli sacerdoti RCJ hanno offerto l'uno dopo l'altro la santa messa per lei. Ci sono stati vicini nei nostri momenti di dolore con la loro presenza confortante.  Lo spirito di famiglia del Rogate si è fatto sentire.

Siamo certi che la sua anima sta ora godendo della visione beatifica dello Sposo Divino e siamo felici di ricordare la sua presenza tra noi, lasciandoci bei ricordi di carità e zelo.

Sr. Evangenline Presente Bastasa was born on March 11, 1974 in Tubuan, Loon, Bohol, Philippines. She is the 6^thof 12 children of late Felix Bastasa, Sr. and  Francisca P resente, both residents of Babak,  Samal, Davao del Norte. She entered the congregation on Feb. 2, 1996 in MND Laoag, Ilocos Norte at the age of  22. As an aspirant, she was asked by the Congregation to study and she finished thedegree in Batchelor of Science in Elementary Education in 2000 at Divine Word College in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte. She was accepted to the pre-novitiate on Dec. 8, 2000 and after a year,on July 31, 2001, she was accepted to the novitiatein Marikina under Sr. Daria Ortega as her novice formator. During the novitiate, she took the teachers’ Board exams which she successfully passed it. After two years of novitiate, she did her first religious profession on July 27, 2003 in Marikina in the hands of Mo. Isabella Carlone, superior delegate. After six years as a junior, she made her Perpetual Profession on July 5, 2009 in her own hometown at Virgin Dolorosa Parish in Babak, Samal, Davao del Norte,  in the hands Mo. Elna Casimsiman, Superior Delegate.

She carried out her apostolic commitments with much dedication. After her profession, she was assigned in Marikina community as a vocation animator from July 28, 2003 – March 28, 2004;  as a religion teacher at St. Andrew Catholic School in Bugallon from March 29, 2004 – May 22, 2006. She was transferred to Marikina community as a classroom Teacher from May 23, 2006 – May 24, 2007. For some urgent demand, she was sent back to Bugallon and served asReligion teacher,Vocation promoter, Parish Youth animator, parish catechist from 2007 - May 1, 2009.

From May 17, 2009 – Sept 6, 2011, she was transferred to Minglanilla, Cebu as a Vice superior, Vocation animator, catechist, Minister of the Holy Eucharist to the sick. From Sept. 14, 2011 – July 30, 2012, she was in Rome for the Charismatic year. Coming back in the Philippines, she was assigned to our community in Vintar  as a community treasurer , SNA Religion teacher and Vocation promoter. In that same community, she was made a superior from 2016 – 2018.

Then from 2018 – 2020, she was assigned in Marikina Community as a vocation promoterand from there, she was transferred to Tahanang Divino Zelo in Silang, Cavite (2020-2021) while rendering also her service as a Campus ministry coordinator at the Rogationist College, assistant to the novice formator, and a community- based catechist. Just after a year of experience, she asked to be transferred back to Marikina a she wanted to teach in our own school and so she was tasked to handle as Grade - 3 adviser  of PAS in 2021 at the same time to help as part time vocation promoter. Due to some necessities she accepted the responsibility as the Vice superior in 2022.

In whatever community she belonged, she gave her best despite of her weaknesses and limitations. She was full of creativity and initiatives. She was an asset to the community by sharing her talents specially in playing the guitar during the liturgical celebrations. She is an exemplar to other community members through her simple ways and straight forward in dealing with them. Her spirit of sacrifice and sense of belongingness are very visible in the community and in her place of apostolate. Until her last moment she demonstrated her passion for vocations. She offered her pains for the increase of vocations in the church especially to our institute, very dear to her.   

In the morning of December 7, 2022, she asked for confession and healing with Fr. Jimmy Matthew, a Holy Cross priest who presided the mass that day because her fever was on and off. Then, she did the normal routine of the day butlate in the morning, she almost collapsed in her room. She felt very weak and so in the afternoon, Mo. Daria and Mo. Isabella rushed her to St. Camillus Hospital for emergency and they left Sr. Delphina Maria Asa  to assist her. At midnight, the doctors called up urgently saying that Sr. Evangeline’s health condition was worsening and advised her to be brought to the ICU which is not available in that hospital becausefor the result of the x-ray revealed a slight enlargement of the heart. So, Mo. Daria and Mo. Isabella went back to the hospital and she was transferred to Asian Hospital with the ambulance.

The doctors did their best to treat her complications in the heart and in the thyroid but only to discover that her immune system was very low and they could not perform other procedures since her body did not respond. Some sisters alternately stayed to assist her. At 4:30 p.m. of Dec. 10 the doctors called up that her condition was fast deteriorating. Mo. Daria and Mo. Isabella rushed to the hospital but due to heavy traffic and heavy rain, they could not reach the hospital immediately.   At 5:15 p.m. we received the news that Sr. Evangeline surrendered herself to the Lord whom she loved and served faithfully in her life.

She stayed in the hospital for 3 days from Dec. 8-10, 2022. After, she was brought to the mortuary of the hospital and the day after, the body was brought to Loyola Memorial Funeral Homes and on Dec. 12 in the morning, her remains was brought to Marikina community, waiting for her scheduled burial on Dec. 14 in the afternoon. The family members from Davao came and some of our sisters from the different communities came too. Many priests concelebrate for the funeral mass presided by Fr. Orville Cajigal, RCJ provincial superior. During the wake, our brother RCJ priests consecutively offered mass for her. They remained close to us in our grieving moments through their comforting presence.  The spirit as one family of the Rogate was really felt.

Her passing brought us surprise because that morning before she died, she still managed to talk to Mo. Daria over the phone, exchanged jokes with the attending nurses and even asked them if they have desires to become Religious. Her zeal was still shining even during her last moments here on earth. Being uncomfortable to give up her modesty due to some medical check-up, after all, she needed to surrender uttering, “well, let it be… I surrender for the sake of vocations”.

We are sure that her soul is now enjoying the beatific vision of the Divine Spouse and we are glad to recall her presence with us, leaving us good memories of charity and zeal.
